Hello - I have been presented an opportunity to work for a manufacturing company as an outside sales rep. I am to sell their product / services into a new market which will have long cycle times (approx 6 months from bid to pmt). The market has not been tested for sales so net margins are currently unknown.

My question: How would a sales rep determine what would be a fair compensation plan in a scenario like this?

what is the order value?

What will your basic salary be?

I would suggest you negotiate a guarentee on commission for the first 6 months after this time you and the company will know what is achievable for the next six months.
Then a review of the last 12 months to make sure both parties are happy.

If you are on a basic of say £25k depending on order value I would suggest a guarentee of £33k ( pro rata) OTE for the 1st six months.
What do you think?
