Are account managers just order takers, just good at relationship building? Or can they actually sell? I mean really sell
I have to say that most account managers I have met have been degree laden individuals with plenty of theory but wouldn't recognize a real opportunity if it smacked them in the face. They make all the right noises but never really seem to identify true needs.

What do you think?

I think buiilding up the relationship with the customer is as important as direct selling them products.

If you can build up a relationship with the buyer at the company you can assure repeat orders etc without having to direct sell

That maybe the case, but who actually makes that first sale? Who opened the door?
I'm not saying that Account managers are totally without their uses, but it is the salesperson that really is the frontline for any company. Without them how can any company grow.

true in the first instance sales people are essential - but -

Repeat sales will account for more income than the occasional sale sold by a salesman

Yes Ashley but any decent salesperson worth their salt can handle repeat business, I do, but the real buzz comes from that new account ,knowing that you have convinced that new customer that your product or service is right for them.

Yes but the customer will not stay with your company if they receive bad service. I know myself I have changed suppliers not beacuse of the sales department but beacuse of the account manager or even other factors unrelated to the quality of the salesman that sold you in the first instance.

Good point, hence the need for the origional salesperson to maintain contact. it was after all their skill and personality that won the business in the first place.

Remember, people buy people first and the product or service second.......FACT!

The whole role of sales people is to keep more business coming in. If they have to do account manager roles, then the business will stay stagnant. Let everyone do what the do best I say!

:P Properly managed a good salesperson can allocate time to do both functions, indeed that's how it always used to be and it worked just fine. But then some brightspark came up with the idea that people should specialise......Why for goodness sake it's not exactly rocket science.......... or maybe it's just likely that the the account manager role was created to keep under achievers in some kind of job.

not true, some people are suited to different roles.

some people specialise in telephone sales, some field sales, business to business etc

Let people specialise if they want to, and if their employers want them to..
