Best of luck with the career change, shsnj.

I think that now is a great time to be 51 or in my case 49, because so many boomers are getting along into middle age, I'd expect the overall attitude toward age to lighten up a bit. I'm sure it won't go away completely.

I have to say you are definitely not too old to start in a sales position. I am 61 and recently started selling Avon products. I had never sold anything before in my life but this is going very well for me. Take the leap!

I admire you for your courage to break into sales. But be aware there is so much ageism out there its untrue. I have bags of experience a good results driven CV and I know for a fact I am being rejected on age for several positions. In a recent interview the hiring sales manager said to me he was worried about the age gap between myself and the other salesmen. I said if your asking me what I have in common with 20 or 30 somethings the answer is nothing In any case who cares what they I think I don't care. I only care about what my prospect thinks the day I honestly believe someone didn't but from me because of my age I will quit selling. Funny thing was this guy himself was in his fifties. I leaned over took my cv off him and walked out. It wasen't one of those instances where he was trying to get a rise out of me, to test me. I think he was just so weak to make a decision that might be questioned. In other words no balls. Sales are never made in a sales office, they are made in a customers office helping them satisfy their business objectives. Good luck in your job hunt just keep going and don't let the b*s*a*ds grind you down. :-)

Spiff thanks for the reply. Appreciate what you say, you are correct if someone is an ageist then I certainly wouldn't want to work for him ,because it would indictcate he had a closed mind, and you never want to work for someone like that ever. People have a preception that anyone in their fifties has lots of money or property and are just waiting to cash it all in and get onto a big fat pension. Truth is that happens for only a small amount of people.
